HEADS UP! OPEN CALL FOR WORK!

OPEN CALL FOR WORK

F*C*004: “ICE CREAM SOCIAL NETWORK”

SUBMISSIONS DUE JUNE 1, 2012 AT 5 PM

Full details after the jump...

DESCRIPTION:
As most of you already know, we at “Freelance” “Curator” are invested in exploring alternate modes of distributing objectified cultural capital, as well as the dialog and creative collaboration that can occur between art makers and consumers, or “end-users.”  F*C*004 is a long-form exhibition experiment that will unfold over a calendar year.  It will engage the above topics by freely distributing image information on the web, then compiling photographic documentation of those images being employed by the end-user throughout the year.

Contributing artists will submit a PDF file containing a reproducible image / object.  The end-user will be able to download the file and, following the artist’s instructions, have the art object physically created by commercial (or other) means.  In exchange for the image information, the end-user will be encouraged to submit photographs of the art object in use.  For this dialogue to function, it is imperative that participating artists design work that can be reproduced / recreated CHEAPLY.  The idea is that anyone, regardless of income, should be able to participate in this collaborative process as an end-user.

The three phases of the exhibition will be as follows:

  1. Web Phase:  A designated website will be set up for the show.  Each week, for a full calendar year, a new image will be posted for download.  Each image will be available to download for one week only, after which, it will remain in a gallery on the website.  Eventually, this gallery will contain all of the images from the exhibition.  The website will remain online after the show ends in perpetuity, or as long as we at “Freelance” “Curator” care to maintain it, whichever comes first.  The website will also compile “use images” sent in by the end-users.

  1. Gallery Phase: At the end of the Web Phase, the exhibition will be physically shown in gallery space(s) in Southern California and / or Detroit.  The exhibit(s) will feature a closing reception wherein gallery patrons will be permitted to take a work of their choosing from the wall at a predetermined point in the evening.  Patrons will be photographed with their selected work before leaving.

  1. Book Phase: Following the Gallery phase, the use images and gallery patron photographs will be compiled in a limited-run book object.  The exact form of this book is yet to be determined, and will largely be decided by the images collected throughout the year.

SUBMITTING
Successful work will embrace the liminality of its digital nonbeing, while anticipating the potential physicality of its corporeal existence.  That is to say, your work should look awesome on both a computer screen and an actual wall or shelf.  Work should also avoid being either a mere simulacrum of an existing physical art object, or a purely “digital” work / photograph.  Ideally, your work will show evidence of a dialog between analog and digital methodologies, although this is not a hard-and-fast rule.

Submission requirements:

  1. Work must be CHEAP and (arguably) EASY for the end-user to reproduce.

  1. You must include production instructions.  These can be as detailed or purposefully vague as you wish.  Do not include these on the PDF file.  Please send a separate Word document.

  1. Your PDF file should be less than 10MB in size.

  1. You should be prepared to provide a physical copy of your work for the Gallery Phase of the exhibition.

Submissions must be received by 5 PM on JUNE 1, 2012.  Please include your name and contact information (including address), a short bio, and statement pertaining to you piece.

Submissions should be sent to: bernieandkristenarecurators (at) gmail.com

FINE PRINT

Obviously you reserve all rights to your work, but by agreeing to be in this show you consent to:

  1. Having your work used and distributed in the ways described above.

  1. Allow us to use your work in any promotional materials or publicity we see fit.

  1. Allow us to use your work in any publication we might see fit to produce pertaining to this exhibition.

  1. Allow each individual end-user to reproduce your work once, for personal use only.

  1. Allow end users to share your PDF file, as long as they provide proper attribution, and links to both the artist’s website (if applicable) and the designated F*C*004 website.

Accepted artists will be notified by 5 PM on June 10, 2012.

The website will launch on June 15, 2012.

Please do submit.   We’ll have ourselves a time.

Sincerely,

Bernie & Kristen
